Google Desktop – For Linux

Thursday 28 June 2007 - Filed under Code + Linux

I was catching up on news and just noticed this tidbit – yesterday Google released the new Docs interface – and they also released Google Desktop – for Linux! The Google Desktop blog says:

…it includes almost all the features from the first Windows version of Google Desktop Search plus the Quick Search Box…

So it is missing some features (no Sidebar) but it’s a start. I need to dig around more and see if it’s running on top of Wine or what… would also be nice if it integrated in the Gnome Deskbar.

No, it’s not on Wine, it’s a GTK app I believe, and it doesn’t seem to integrate with anything, shame.
I installed it yesterday and ran a few tests, and have now uninstalled it again. Beagle and deskbar with the gmail plugin seemed to give better results IMHO, plus integrate better and don’t have all the closed source privacy issues.

Thanks for the feedback. I had thunderstorms and lightening all night so didn’t have a chance to try it out! Opinions seem split 50/50 so far from the things I’ve read. I’ve been happy with Beagle but will probably give Google a try just to see how it works…
