Pulse 2 Released
Monday 24 March 2008 - Filed under Code
Awhile ago I blogged about Pulse – an Eclipse management tool. Last week they released version 2 with the following new features:
- Management of workspace settings and project sets
- Ability to share and manage software available on private update sites ($)
- Significantly larger software catalog
- Improvements in the resolution of software configurations
- Support for NTLM v2 style proxy servers
They are also expanding their service with Pulse Freelance:
Pulse Freelance enables users to share profiles that leverage software from private update sites (including behind a firewall) and manage workspace settings across a team.
For $6 a month you get:
- Use private update sites for additional software and versions.
- Enable workspace project consistency across systems and users.
- Share workspace settings with individuals and groups.
They also mention Pulse Private Label…
Pulse Private Label is targeted for organizations that need to maintain their own private catalog of software, and also includes the ability to host the Pulse servers within a corporate network.
But I couldn’t find any detailed information (or costs) on that service.
And finally Aptana is now available in the catalog! Unfortunately no word yet on getting the Adobe ColdFusion plugins added :(

It should be noted that there is no Mac or Linux client yet, but hopefully v2 will be stronger than v1. Although it’s usable, I’ve found all kinds of annoyances with the current version:
1. Installing non-packaged software is a pain in the ass and can’t be upgraded through the usual upgrade process.
2. Eclipse itself can’t be patched through the usual channels
3. Some settings just won’t persist (e.g. my Svn ignore preferences) between sessions.
Here’s hoping v2 is a better offering. I love the idea, but the implementation is lacking at this point, I’ve found.

Rob – I was under the impression there were installers now for Linux and OSX: http://www.poweredbypulse.com/all_os.php
To be honest I haven’t tried v2 yet though I may give it a shot at home to see how it works on Linux.
The Pulse folks do read my blog so if you try v2 and have feedback – please feel free to comment again!

And a quick comment – someone from Pulse did email me and let me know that they are still communicating with Adobe about getting the ColdFusion plugins included… (big company + lawyers = long time) :)

@Jim -
If you look closely, only the Windows downloads are prefixed with “pulse2-”. Also, if I visit the download page on my Mac, I see a note that Mac and Linux versions are coming soon.

Jim,
Re: the operating systems, Rob is correct – at least on the Pulse 2 version. The version for these OS’s will be available within a couple of weeks. We rolled out Windows only initially.
As far as any Adobe plugins go, we would love to have their stuff to enrich the catalog for certain (as we would many companies and tools), but we do not have anything definite on that front. I’ll be sure to let you know any developments.
Thanks,
Jens
